Cost to clean up toxic PFAS pollution

January 16, 2025

The cost to address PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) pollution in the UK and Europe could exceed £1.6 trillion over 20 years, with the UK alone potentially facing an annual cleanup bill of £9.9 billion if emissions are not controlled. PFAS chemicals are extremely persistent in the environment and have been linked to several health issues, including infertility and cancer, and are found in many consumer and industrial products. Efforts to mitigate the contamination include high-temperature incineration and developing more cost-effective remediation methods, with many advocating for stricter use restrictions and emissions reductions to prevent further environmental impact.
